X5 battery life: 90 minutes, unless you stop
Buy buttons go to the Insta360 store for the X5, the camera I film on. I earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Insta360 didn't see this before it went up. Specs and lab tests are from the reviewers I name. I have not used the X6 or a GoPro Max 2.
One battery in the X5 gets me through the rides I actually film. I don't time it. Insta360 says 93 minutes at 8K and a TechRadar test got about 90, so we're in the same paddock. The way I can kill it is leaving it recording while I'm standing at the lights.
- Rolling, daylight, one battery. Enough. I don't film every kilometre.
- 8K at the lights, or while it's plugged in. This is when it cooks.
- A long day: drop to 5.7K, or put a spare in the pocket.
- Cafe stop: 20 minutes on the charger gets you to 80%.
| Setting | Insta360, lab, 25 °C | Someone measured it |
|---|---|---|
| 8K30 | 93 min | About 90 min, TechRadar. Their unit then died of heat at 47 min while sitting still |
| 5.7K30 | 135 min | Insta360's own suggestion when the body is getting hot |
| 5.7K24 Endurance | Up to 208 min | A lab claim. Trusted Reviews thinks the long numbers need the settings turned down |
| Charge | 80% in 20 min | Faster than the X6, which takes 24 min for the same |
I haven't timed a pack to the minute. "Lasts my rides" means I'm not rolling for five hours at 8K. If you are, the spare battery is the answer and the table is just you deciding which mode to leave it in.
It cooks when the bike stops
TechRadar left one sitting on a desk at 8K. It shut itself off at 47 minutes. Indoors. Not a hot afternoon on Beach Road. Insta360's heat page says the same thing in plainer words: 8K uses more power, so the body runs hotter, and they consider that normal. The fixes are ordinary.
- Film while you're moving. The air does more than a setting.
- If it warns you, drop to 5.7K30.
- Don't record while it's charging. You're stacking heat.
- Let the screen sleep. Turn AI Highlights off.
- Don't sit in the phone app in the sun, watching the preview. If you've been connected for half an hour, give it 5 or 10 minutes. They want the battery above half before you connect.
The complaint threads say the same thing I hear from other riders. It rarely cooks while you're actually riding. It cooks when you plant it and ask for 8K. Melbourne summer hits the 40 degree operating limit on the bad days. On those days I don't leave it running while I buy a coffee.
A long ride
You've got three options, and none of them are clever. Drop to 5.7K, which also runs cooler. Carry the spare, it slides out. Or hit record for the climb and the sprint and leave the bunch ride alone. road.cc mentions a 2,800 mAh pack on top of the 2,400 mAh one in the camera. I use the standard one.
The X6 is the camera they built for people who got sick of this. 140 minutes claimed at 8K, 136 in TechRadar's test, and it didn't shut down while they tried to cook it. I haven't used one. The choice is in X5 vs X6. For daytime rides that fit in about 90 minutes of footage, I'd still buy the X5 once it's the cheaper camera.
Sometimes the card fills up first
Top bitrate is 180 Mbps. That's about 80 GB an hour if it's actually sitting on the maximum. A 256 GB card is roughly three hours of 8K, less if you're also writing the flat InstaFrame file next to it. V30 or faster, exFAT, up to 1 TB. Buy the card with the camera. BikeGremlin's 512 GB card was the painful line in a pile of extras that reached about €485.
Which mode to leave it in is the settings guide. The rides are the X5 review.
Insta360 X5 battery FAQ
How long does the Insta360 X5 battery last on a ride?
About 90 minutes at 8K30 in TechRadar's test, against a 93 minute claim. 135 minutes claimed at 5.7K30. Up to 208 claimed in Endurance Mode. My normal rides fit one battery.
Does it overheat while cycling?
At 8K, when you stop. TechRadar saw 47 minutes before a shutdown, sitting still. Keep moving, or drop to 5.7K30. Don't record while it charges.
How do you get through a long ride?
5.7K, a spare battery, or record the sections you will post. Twenty minutes on charge gets you to 80%.
What memory card?
V30 or faster, exFAT. About 80 GB an hour at the 180 Mbps maximum, so 256 GB is roughly three hours of 8K.
Film the bit you're going to post
That's the whole plan. One battery, 8K while you're rolling, and stop the recording when you stop the bike.
